After 100 weeks in a row, Brother D and Miss Bren celebrate by presenting Mail Order Zombie #100, the Dawn of the Dead special! Brother D has seen both George A. Romero's original Dawn of the Dead and the Zach Snyder-directed remake more than once, but Miss Bren . . . ? She'd not seen either of them prior to watching them for this episode. What will happen when a zombie-movie-watching-veteran and a relative newcomer sit down for a discussion about one of the benchmarks of zombie cinema? Who will walk away alive? Who will walk away with divorce papers? Who will call in? We'll give you the answer to that last question; Mail Order Zombie received congratulatory phone calls, holiday wishes and thoughts on Dawn of the Dead from the MOZ Family and fellow podcasters, and you'll get to hear all this in MOZ #100. Brother D will also turn his critical ears toward the scores from both films, and in a special Post Script, he'll discuss the 1979 Dawn of the Dead novelization (written by George A. Romero and Susanna Sparrow). Where else are you going to hear discussion about Dawn of the Dead, taking over a shopping mall, Star Wars action figures, Stephen King, Darkman, Frank Lloyd Wright, The Evil Dead, Quarantine, Peter David, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and multiple personality disorder? Right here! (The Zombie Beat and the Feedback Discussion will be back next week.) |

The Wagner/Cuban Companies' Magnet Releasing, genre arm of Magnolia Pictures, announced today that it has acquired US rights to George A. Romero's Survival of the Dead, the latest in the legendary and beloved series of zombie films which bowed at the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals earlier this year. Romero, one of the most influential and respected horror auteurs of all time, has created a new, terrifying vision that combines viscerally gory undead action with biting social commentary and a return to the black humor and playfulness of his seminal film, Dawn of the Dead. Magnet will release the film as part of its Ultra VOD program this spring, debuting it on VOD platforms nationwide a month before its theatrical release.
Like its predecessors, George A. Romero's Survival of the Dead takes place in a desperate, nightmarish world where the dead walk the earth, relentlessly attacking the living. It is the story of Plum Island – a beautiful refuge whose isolation allows two powerful families to maintain a semblance of order in the wake of the zombie holocaust. But as the inhabitants slowly die off, the two clans become sharply divided: the O’Flynns believe that the undead must be destroyed without exception, while the Muldoons insist that afflicted loved ones be kept “alive” until a cure is found. The result is an escalating showdown with echoes of a classic Western stand-off that erupts in brutality and violence. “George A. Romero is an undisputed cinematic legend, and we’re honored to be bringing another installment of this incredible series of films to horror fans,” said Magnolia President Eamonn Bowles. “Survival... is smart, extremely fun and a worthy addition to the ...of the Dead franchise.” Says Romero, “I’m a big admirer of the team at Magnolia. They’re creative and passionate, and I’m excited to put Survival... in their hands.”

This is Mail Order Zombie's Thanksgiving Leftovers episode! Brother D reviews two poultry-themed zombie movies this week - Zombeak, written and directed by Sam Drog, and Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead from director Lloyd Kaufman who swings by the show for an interview in which he talks about Poultrygeist as well as the "giant conspiracy of devil-worshipping international media conglomerates." (And for the record, I HAVE read Mr. Kaufman's books! I may not enjoy all his movies, but I certainly respect the man and his fight for artistic independence . . .) The new Zombie Aptitude Test question is revealed to the MOZ Family (November's ZAT answers will be reviewed next week), and Miss Bren rounds out the show when she joins the Fedback Discussion. Over at The Zed Word: Zombie Blog, our friend Aaron lets us all know that Deadspeil, the short zombie movie combining zombies and curling, will be showing at the new Giggleshorts Theatre at 296 Brunswick Ave., 2nd Floor, Toronto, Canada. The short movie definitely earns the MOZ Stamp of Approval; Brother D was fortunate enough to see the movie at Zompire: The Undead Film Festival earlier this year.

This is a few weeks old, but I just stumbled across this on YouTube.
The history-lesson aspect of this is a little light and oversimplistic, and the footage from Michael Jackson's "Thriller" does run a bit long (perhaps at the expense of any zombie movies that were released between the original Night of the Living Dead and the "Thriller" music video), but it was nice to see Hammer's Plague of the Zombies get a little attention.

The Hills Run Red hits DVD September 29, 2009, and I think fans of modern and classic slasher films would be wise to check it out. David J. Schow (who's been a horror screenwriter since the late 80s having been involved with A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child and Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III, so he's no stranger to slasher films) is one of the writers, and he brings his familiar horror movie sensibility to the movie in a way that's one part nostalgic, one part familiar and yet still one part fresh. (Schow is joined by writer John Dombrow who both co-wrote the screenplay from a story by producer John Carchietta.)
Tad Hilgenbrink plays Tyler, a young filmmaker who's become obsessed with an 80s horror film that never quite made it to the theaters. The Hills Run Red is the name of the horror film within this horror film (and there's a quick bit of bright dialogue acknowledging that, yes, this is also the name of a Western from the 1960s). Tyler ropes his best friend and girlfriend, Lalo and Serina played by Alex Wyndham and Janet Montgomery respectively, into joining him on his quest, and eventually, they find Alexa, who acted in The Hills Run Red when she was a little girl; now she's grown up and is working at a strip club. Sophie Monk plays Alexa, and she's one to watch in the film. In fact, these four leads all sold their roles believably, and I enjoyed watching the four of them delve deeper into the mystery of this mysterious horror film. Their search brings them back to the film's original shooting locations, and along the way, we go through a few twists and turns before the final plot point spools onto the screen. There are some surprises I'd like to keep from spoiling; I found most of them to be quite effective. Babyface is the slasher/subject of The Hills Have Red, both the film within the film and the film itself. He seems to be cut from the Jason Voorhees cloth - he's a hulking figure, stomping through the woods and wearing part of a babydoll's face as a mask. The character's back story is revealed in the opening credits through a creepy and grimy sequence that left me surprised. Surprise is perhaps the theme of my review of The Hills Run Red. This is a straight-to-DVD offering, and it's a modern day slasher, so if I'm being completely honest, my hopes weren't very high. However, I found myself really enjoying this movie, and I know it's something I'll be going back to for repeat viewings. Director Dave Parker has crafted a movie that's well-conceived, well-paced, and as far as I'm concerned, should be well-received.

No matter your political view, it's always nice to see zombies mentioned in the mainstream, and when Max Brooks is brought to the table, it's even better.

Big Man Japan, also known as Dai-Nipponjin, is an overly long near-mockumentary following Daisatô, a lonely superhero who's fallen out of favor with the general public. Directed by Hitoshi Matsumoto, who also stars in the film as Daisatô, the superhero with a low publicity rating, Big Man Japan presents its story in a fashion similar to the television show "The Office." A shoulder-mounted camera follows Daisatô through his routine-filled life, and occasionally, monsters show up to threaten the country. When this happens, Daisatô nonchalantly reports to one of a handful of facilities scattered throughout Japan, has electricity pumped into his body through some clips attached to his chest, and grows to Godzilla-like stature to battle the offending and similarly-sized monster.
And afterward? He spends some time cooling down/moping until he shrinks back down to normal size and continues with his mundane existence until the next monster comes along. Matsumoto co-wrote the movie with Mitsuyoshi Takasu, and while some of the storytelling style has an improved “that-just-happened” feel, the story is quite tight and at times, poignant. Daisatô comes from a line of heroes who have, throughout history, called themselves “Big Man Japan” and done battle against various kaiju threats over the years. At one point, the hero was worshipped, but these days, the people of Japan don’t look upon their national hero with any sense of hero worship. The budget’s been cut, and even the government doesn’t give their hero the support or respect once reserved for Big Man Japan. The scene in which the customary ceremony that takes place before Daisatô’s transformation into Big Man Japan is particularly telling – it takes place in a cluttered government office of some sort, and even the documentary crew seem a bit disrespectful as they have no problem interrupting the ritual and asking them to start over so they can get a better camera shot. As for Big Man Japan himself, he’s a CG creation. Every monster in the movie is. Sometimes they look okay; sometimes they look like something out of a video game cut scene. I understand not wanting to rely on having an actor wear a rubber suit or creating a miniature city for actors to destroy, and most of the monsters Big Man Japan fights are just un-humanoid enough that it would have been difficult to create a prosthetic make-up effect/suit that would not have blown the credibility and the reality presented in the rest of the movie. Overall, the movie runs a bit long. While the scenes featuring Daisatô do serve their purpose, they sometimes threaten to bore the audience. Additionally, the monster-fighting scenes do run a bit short, but the focus of this movie is not on kaiju-fighting; it is on Daisatô’s dreary existence as a government superhero whose country would rather forget about him.

There's art house and then there's art school, and Severed Ways: The Norse Discovery of America is neither. Tony Stone is the writer/director behind the movie, and I have to be completely honest – I don’t quite understand what his point was. I mean, it’s not like the movie’s incomprehensible. I get it. It’s not hard to follow. Vikings show up on the shores of Greenland, a couple of them get left behind, and . . . heavy metal plays in the background. Severed Ways isn’t necessarily an experimental movie – there’s a semblance of narrative here. And it’s easy to follow, especially since we have Chapter title cards guiding us through the film. Why we have Chapter marks in the movie itself I don’t quite understand, but in case you’re having trouble following along, or if you a writer/director who’s having a hard time connecting story sequences, I suppose they’re helpful. I'd like to mention what I liked about the movie. It looks great. The minimalist production design succeeds in making the woods and coast of modern-day Just turn down the volume. The movie’s gimmick . . . er, soundtrack is made up of songs from Popol Vuh, Judas Priest and Burzum. I understand the connection between Vikings and Norwegian death metal, as tenuous as the connection might be, but to drop Morbid Angel’s 'Desolate Ways' into a movie that the filmmakers are obviously trying to present in a somewhat realistic sense didn’t seem to make sense. Stone takes great care in presenting how real, or as the DVD cover tells us, how “gritty” the Vikings’ reality was, but the inclusion of this music made the movie feel like a long experimental music video. Whether Severed Ways: The Norse Discovery of America is a long music video or a gritty historical epic, including a scene in which one of the characters defecates and then wipes himself with the available foliage does nothing to make the movie interesting or worth your time.

Episode 80 kicks off with Summer Knights, Mail Order Zombie's month-long look at Amando de Ossorio's Blind Dead films (along with Dread Media); Brother D tries a bit of Spanish when reviewing the first film in the franchise, Tombs of the Blind Dead from 1971. He'll also review the 1980 Bruno Mattei film Hell of the Living Dead. After the Introduction and the news in the Zombie Beat (special thanks to Need-a-Nickname Scott and Jay Emmitt for their hard work this week!), Brother D and Miss Bren are joined by Aaron from Zed Word: The Zombie Blog for a lengthy discussion of the upcoming Steven Rumbelow adaptation of the David Moody novel Autumn. A new Zombie Aptitude Test question is also announced, and this time, a contest is worked into the ZAT - score! We live in a wonderful technological age. The Internet can help put movie enthusiasts in contact with movie makers and movie suppliers; nearly every cinematic craving can be met be filled with a bit of time, research, patience and communication. Except for Siege of the Dead. Brother D heard about this movie from a friend at a film festival a few years ago, and has since then been trying to find it for himself. He's been told it's a great no-budget independent movie, but the moviemakers are no longer selling it online. The production company's website is no more, and the only clip Brother D has seen of the movie is the trailer on YouTube. Initial attempts at contacting anyone involved in the movie have not been productive, but we're not giving up! Mail Order Zombie family - do any of YOU have this movie? Brother D would really like to see it - not necessarily to review on the show (although that would probably happen!), but to finally see it for himself! Can you help hook a Brother up?

It's Zombie Movie Veterans' Week here at Mail Order Zombie Central! Larry Purtell, veteran zombie movie actor (Zombie Campout, Die-Ner (Get It?), Dozers, Zombie Ed), drops by for an interview with Brother D and answers the question: "How does one go from acting in church plays to wrangling zombies?" (Mr. Purtell was very generous with his time, and has sent Mail Order Zombie several photos from his time working on Zombie Campout as well as at the Silo X Haunted Attraction, and throughout the week, these pics will turn up on MailOrderZombie.com.) Another zombie movie veteran - Trent Haaga - also gets a little love this week when Brother D reviews 2002's Dead & Rotting (he appears in front of the camera in this one!) and the upcoming release Deadgirl (he wrote this one!). Miss Bren hits the backhalf of the show for a massive Feedback Discussion in which the [REC] vs. Quarantine conversation continues, we talk about Swan Song a bit more, and there's news about Phantasm II. (Brother D and Miss Bren also appeared on Dead Lantern's World Famous Splattercast this week in Episode 141 to discuss the Mad Max franchise. Brother D also joined Desmond Reddick to discuss the film scores of Clive Barker in Episode 100 of Dread Media.) Mail Order Zombie and the Midnight Podcast are teaming up for a crossover mini-roundtable Q&A, and while Corey and Brother D can certainly sit and just stare at each other for half an hour, it might be more fun for the listeners to participate by submitting their own questions to be bandied between the two of them! If you’ve ever wanted to know what these two titans of zombie movie knowledge think, email your questions now to MailOrderZombie@gmail.com. This recording is happening Saturday, August 1st, so we need your questions ASAP. Corey’s posting a similar call for questions at his website. Here’s the twist - Brother D isn’t going to see the questions Corey gathers and Corey isn’t going to see the questions Brother D gathers, so the answers will come as fast and furious as a 28 Days-style zombie. (That’s right. We called them zombies. What?) We can’t promise we’ll get to all the questions if we get a lot, but we’ll certainly try! This is gonna rock, y’all! |

Where else are you going to go to hear about a zombie opera? No where but Episode 78 of Mail Order Zombie. Brother D and Miss Bren attended Maelstrom: The Zombie Opera last weekend, and they bring you a review of the production as well as interviews with the cast and crew. (Mail Order Zombie would like to thank Reed Reimer, Ben Larson, Nico Izambard, Viktor Maddok, Damien Brooksbank, Claire Craig-Sheets, Anna Viemester, Jeremy Griffin, Bryan Coover and the staff of the Interstate Firehouse Cultural Center for hosting us and giving us a moment of their time.) Maelstrom: The Zombie Opera runs through July 25th, 2009. Also this week, in Miss Bren's Post Script, she reviews the short zombie novel Dead Earth: The Green Dawn by Mark Justice and David T. Wilbanks. Movie-wise, Brother D reviews the Joseph D. Smith zombie movie Zombie Campout from 2003. Answers for the July Zombie Aptitude Test are still due, and in the Feedback Discussion, the movies [REC] and Quarantine get a little more discussion . . . among other things. If you're in the Pacific Northwest, and you're a zombie movie fan, you owe it to yourself to see Maelstrom: The Zombie Opera at the Interstate Firehouse Cultural Center in Portland, OR. We'll be covering this in Episode 78 (with interviews!), but the show only runs one more weekend - July 23rd, 24th and 25th - so if you're interested, and you're in the area, you need to see Maelstrom. Episode 77 marks a milestone for us here at Mail Order Zombie - can you guess what it is before Brother D fails to keep anyone in suspense and mentions what the milestone is less than one minute into this week's show? Speaking of suspense, Miss Bren and Brother D sat down to watch [REC] from directors Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza, and then Brother D reviewed the Blaine Cade and Jason Horton directed upcoming zombie apocalypse movie Edges of Darkness. One of these two movies made Brother D jump. You'll have to listen to the reviews to find out which one. O'Day is back with Part Two of his Undead Combat series in MOZ's Survival Tips, and this time around, he goes over the use of firearms in a world overrun by the undead. After Need-a-Nickname Scott joins Jay Emmitt for this week's Zombie Beat, he poses a question to the MOZ Family; Brother D has a question of his own; and of course, there's the Zombie Aptitude Test question as well! The show runs a bit long this week because Miss Bren and Brother D tried to squeeze in as many emails and voicemails as possible in this week's Feedback Discussion, and Wayne Kotke does it again - we'll just leave it at that. It's finally happened! Mail Order Zombie tackles an Asian zombie movie! Versus, directed by Ryûhei Kitamura, gets more than the review treatment - both Brother D and Miss Bren watched the film and discuss it at length in this episode. And because Brother D couldn't get enough samurai sword action, he also reviews Ninjas vs. Zombies from writer/director Justin Timpane. This month's Zombie Aptitude Test question, the weekly Feedback Discussion and a chunk of zombie news in the Zombie Beat round out this episode. Hang on! (There's also been a request to release Episode 075 without the Roundtable attached, and since we aim to please . . . Here it is!) Episode 75 of Mail Order Zombie is our most bedazzled yet! To celebrate Independence Day in the US, Brother D reviews the movie Uncle Sam, directed by William Lustig, and he's only reviewing one movie this week so that there's room for the jam-packed Feedback Discussion and the Zombie Aptitude Test answers from last month's ZAT question. This episode runs a bit longer than normal, and that's because in addition to the hefty Feedback, we've got a first here at Mail Order Zombie - we've got the First MOZ Roundtable featuring Brother D and a handful of regular Mail Order Zombie contributors. (Truth be told, there were some audio issues with the recording, so the Roundtable has been moved to the end of the episode. There's some great discussion and content here, but Skype and the other powers that be seemed to be interested in contribution their own hissy two cents worth as well, so please be patient with the audio quality!) The episode starts with a mini-tribute to Michael Jackson's Thriller music video, and this runs about 15 minutes, and then the show is off and running! Brother D fought the internet while Miss Bren fought a wasp to bring you Episode 74 of Mail Order Zombie, the show devoted to zombie movies . . . and a little bit more! Events outside of Mail Order Zombie Central's control threatened to keep you from getting your MOZ fix, but a little help from the Mail Order Zombie Family helped to make this show one you can't miss! O'Day returns with the first installment in a series of MOZ Survival Tips instructing us on personal combat and the undead. Mathew from Shelbytownship, Michigan, brings two new installments of The ABCs of Zombies (and he's thrilled to be able to talk about a movie Brother D once called "not-a-zombie-movie"). And Jay Emmitt and Need-a-Nickname Scott step up to handle the news chores in this week's Zombie Beat. Of course, there are reviews this week as well - Brother D looks at the ultra independent movies Doomed to Consume, directed by Jason Stephenson, and Fast Zombies With Guns, directed by Bennie Woodell; and Miss Bren takes a break from her zombies to dive into the post-apocalyptic world of Cormac McCarthy's novel The Road in Miss Bren's Post Script. We're still taking answers for the June Zombie Aptitude Test; we need to know what you'd do if the zombie apocalypse was Return of the Living Dead-flavored, so call or write us to take part in this ZAT question. Remember Brother D mentioning the upcoming Summer Knights event this August? In this week's episode, a few more details are spilled for the Family. Brother D crashes Miss Bren's Post Script with a book review of his own when he reviews the book Zombie Holocaust: How the Living Dead Devoured Pop Culture, written by David Flint and released by Plexus Publishing Limited, and two Mail Order Zombie Family members have contributions this week: Chris Toohey reviews Scott Sigler's audio story Passenger, and Mathew from Shelbytownship, Michigan, gives us another installment in his ABCs of Zombies series. Episode 72 of Mail Order Zombie is another super-sized episode of straight-to-DVD-zombie-movie-goodness . . . and a little bit more. Brother D takes a look two zombie movies this week: Melvin, from director Henry Weintraub; and RetarDEAD, from the team of Rick Popko and Dan West, are reviewed. In the middle of the movie reviews, Brother D sits in with Miss Bren during the Post Script to talk about the post-apocalyptic novel Swan Song by Robert McCammon. Dr. J presents the next installment of his Med of the Dead series, and Zombie Hunter Tony submits another Zombie Squad report, this time covering an game store event that was crashed by zombies. Also, Miss Bren and Brother D attended the 2009 Crypticon Horror Convention in Seattle, WA, this past weekend, so in this episode, you'll get to drop in on the Phantasm panel, as well as hear from folks like Ken Foree, Adrienne King and Reggie Bannister. He didn't get a chance to do so last week, so Brother D met with Platoon of the Dead special make-up effects artist Rob Merickel at Crypticon, and this interview makes its way into this week's episode as well. You'll hear all this, plus the Zombie Aptitude Test, the Feedback Discussion, another contest and two birthday greetings in this week's episode of Mail Order Zombie. Episode 71 of Mail Order Zombie is filled with pudding! And zombie movies! And a book! And undead karaoke? In this week's episode, Brother D reviews the zombie movie DVDs Dead Summer, directed by Eddie Benevich (courtesy of SRS Cinema), and the upcoming Destined to be Ingested, directed by Sofian Khan. And how often do you get to watch a straight-to-DVD zombie movie on the big screen? Brother D did just that at the World Premiere of John Bowker's Platoon of the Dead. He also interviewed the director as well as producer Joe Sherlock. In Miss Bren's Post Script, Miss Bren reviews the short novel Deadlands by Scott A. Johnson. Throughout the entire episode, the Zombie Aptitude Test submissions are reviewed (ah, THAT'S where the undead karaoke came from!), and a new ZAT question is laid out before the class (this ZAT question was suggested by MOZ Family Member Harold Jennett, whose work you can check out at http://www.mimescomic.com/). From writer/podcaster Mark Justice's website: David Wilbanks and I have sold Dead Earth: The Vengeance Road to Permuted Press. The novel is a sequel to Dead Earth: The Green Dawn, and should be out in 2010. "They crossed over from another world, bringing death and domination to Earth. With demonic technology they can raise the dead into an unholy conquering army. The "necros" destroyed Jubal Slate’s home and everyone he loved. Now the only thing that matters to Slate is payback. No matter how far he has to go or how many undead warriors he must slaughter, Slate and his motley band of followers will stop at nothing to end the reign of the aliens. Even if it costs them their lives. When you’ve lost everything, the only thing left is vengeance." Where can you go every May to watch zombie (and vampire) movies? Zompire: The Undead Film Festival. Where can you go to hear about the festival if you missed the event? Mail Order Zombie. In Episode 70 of MOZ, Brother D covers the event, reviewing some of the zombie movies shown (The Revenant and Morgue Story: Blood, Blowfish & Comics and a number of zombie short movies), interviewing filmmaker Kerry Prior, festival director Andrew Migliore and game designer Scott Glancy, and hanging with Mail Order Zombie Family Member O'Day. Additionally, Zombie Hunter Tony calls in a report from a local Zombie Prom. Zombie events aside, we can't let a week go by without a DVD or book review; Brother D reviews Zombiegeddon, directed by Chris Watson; and in Miss Bren's Post Script, David Wellington's Monster Island gets a little critical attention. You've got until next week to submit your answers to the current Zombie Aptitude Test which was inspired by the mockumentary The Zombeatles: All You Need is Brains, so get singing, y'all! The backhalf of the episode is set aside for the weekly Feedback Discussion, where not only do we talk about zombie movies and answer listener emails and voicemails, but Brother D questions . . . Canadian gangs? And Miss Bren finally puts her foot down; Brother D's zombie books have no place in the bathroom. Email us at MailOrderZombie@gmail.com or call us at 206-202-2505! Focus Features just sent this over to MOZ Central: A new era in animated storytelling begins on 9.9.09. Visionary filmmakers Tim Burton (The Corpse Bride, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory) and Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted, Nightwatch) join forces to produce wunderkind director Shane Acker’s distinctively original and thrilling tale. 9 stars Elijah Wood, John C. Reilly, Jennifer Connelly, Martin Landau, Christopher Plummer and Crispin Glover and features the music of Danny Elfman. When 9 (The Lord of the Ring’s Elijah Wood) first comes to life, he finds himself in a post-apocalyptic world. All humans are gone, and it is only by chance that he discovers a small community of others like him taking refuge from fearsome machines that roam the earth intent on their extinction. Despite being the neophyte of the group, 9 convinces the others that hiding will do them no good. They must take the offensive if they are to survive, and they must discover why the machines want to destroy them in the first place. As they'll soon come to learn, the very future of civilization may depend on them. Become a fan of the official 9 Facebook Page here:

What better way to celebrate Episode 69 of Mail Order Zombie than to review the movies Erotic Nights of the Living Dead and Orgy of the Dead? That not enough for you? Miss Bren's Post Script tackles the naughty bits (and the non-naughty-bits) of the vampire/zombie novel Roses of Blood on Barbwire Vines. We don't spend the entire episode in the gutter; Mathew from Shelbytownship, Michigan, shares another installment of the ABC's of Zombies, and there's a sneak preview (courtesy of Third Coast Zed) of some of the answers we've received so far for May's Zombie Aptitude Test. And did somebody say, "pickles?" Email us at MailOrderZombie@gmail.com or call us at 206-202-2505! It's Zombie Girl week here at Mail Order Zombie as Brother D and Miss Bren are reviewing the movies Pathogen, directed by Emily Hagins (this is the only zombie movie to be directed by a twelve-year-old girl); and Zombie Girl: The Movie, directed by Justin Johnson, Aaron Marshall and Erik Mauck (the documentary following the production of Pathogen). Brother D is also reviewing the Christopher Thomas score from Zombie Girl: The Movie. In Miss Bren's Post Script, Jake's Wake, written by John Skipp and Cody Goodfellow, gets a little attention, and Mathew from Shelbytownship, Michigan, drops a few more ABCs of Zombies. We're still taking answers for the current Zombie Aptitude Test as well. The backhalf of the show is devoted to the weekly Feedback Discussion, so you'll want to check that out for this week's emails and voicemails, as well as a slip of the tongue that has given Brother D a few interesting ideas for a t-shirt design (or not!) (And remember, Brother D will be attending the Zompire Film Festival May 15-17 here in Portland, OR, where he's most excited about seeing Day of the Dead on the big screen! Check out that film festival at http://www.zompire.com.) Email us at MailOrderZombie@gmail.com or call us at 206-202-2505! Episode 67 of Mail Order Zombie is packed and stacked with over 3 hours of zombie goodness! Brother D reviews the mockumentary The Zombeatles: All You Need is Brains, as well as the upcoming zombie feature Deadlands 2: Trapped. Gary Ugarek, the writer/director of Deadlands 2: Trapped also joins Brother D for an information-filled interview in which he discusses his zombie extra experiences on the set of two big budget zombie movies, his reasoning behind directing two independent zombie movies of his own, his thoughts on film music in zombie movies, and if you stick around to the end of the show, he'll even talk about . . . food(?). In Miss Bren's Post Script, she sits down with Brother D to talk about the Margaret Atwood post-apocalyptic/dystopian future novels The Handmaid's Tale and Oryx and Crake. Mathew from Shelbytownship, Michigan, launches his new series, the ABCs of Zombies, and the answers from the April Zombie Aptitude are reviewed before the new monthly ZAT question is introduced for May. All this, plus a smattering of Feedback makes this episode of Mail Order Zombie one of the most content-heavy to date, so strap in and make sure you pack a lunch! Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release [REC], the international smash hit that inspired the Screen Gems film Quarantine, on DVD July 14, 2009. Winner of multiple awards including two Goya Awards (Spain’s Movie Awards) including Best New Actress for Manuela Velasco (Law of Desire), [REC] includes “REC: Making-Of” Featurette and both English and original Spanish language versions of the film. A beautiful TV reporter and her cameraman are doing a routine interview at a local fire station when an emergency call comes in. Accompanying the firefighters to a nearby apartment, the news team begins recording the bloodcurdling screams coming from inside an elderly woman's unit. After authorities seal off the building to contain the threat, the news crew, firefighters and residents are trapped to face a lethal terror inside. With the camera running, nothing may survive but the film itself.

Now THIS is Episode 66 of the podcast devoted to straight-to-DVD zombie movies and a little bit more - Mail Order Zombie. This week, Brother D reviews two movies - Beneath the Surface, directed by Blake Reigle, and Die-Ner (Get It?), directed by Patrick Horvath - and Miss Bren reviews the post-apocalyptic novel On the Beach by Nevil Shute. Also, Dr. J makes Brother D's skin crawl with a new installment of Med of the Dead, and the Gary Ugarek and Brian Wright score from the upcoming zombie movie Deadlands 2: Trapped gets a good listen when Brother D reviews it (before reviewing the movie Deadlands 2: Trapped next week in Episode 067). Miss Bren's Post Script is back in this week's episode of Mail Order Zombie, and Brother D joins her as they look at two different zombie novels - Miss Bren reviews The Rising: Selected Scenes from the End of the World by Brian Keene, and Brother D reviews Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Jane Austen and Seth-Grahame-Smith. As for this week's movie reviews, Brother D fires a few more Headshots when he looks at the movies Livelihood, directed by Ryan Graham, and Black Swarm, directed by David Winning (It goes without saying that Miss Bren will not be watching Black Swarm any time soon!) A decision is made regarding whether or not the Headshot rating scale should be changed, and answers are still being collected for this month's Zombie Aptitude Test. Episode 063 of Mail Order Zombie is a bit longer than normal as Miss Bren and Brother D make it a point to get through the backlog of emails and voicemails in this week's Feedback Discussion, but Brother D can't let a week go by without two more movie reviews - the Ed Brisson short movie Graveyard and Doomed, directed by Michael Su, receive their headshots this week. The Zombie Beat returns to the show with Mail Order Zombie's top zombie news stories for the week, and last month's Zombie Aptitude Test question's answers are gone over in front of the class. The next installment of O'Day's Survival Tips gives us all even more information regarding how we might survive in the case of a real zombie apocalypse . . . or any other emergency, and stay tuned to the end of the show to hear a few more thoughts from the MOZ Family regarding the March 2009 HorrorHound Weekend, including thoughts from Slug! Frankenhood follows two ordinary guys, Motown and Darius, who dream about leaving behind their mundane and routine lives working at a morgue for a more exciting way of life. To their surprise, things quickly get interesting after they stumble upon their crazy co-worker attempting to bring a dead man back to life! Though strange and outrageous, the guys turn the unusual situation into an opportunity to win $25,000 by recruiting their “new” friend to enter a 3-on-3 basketball tournament. After some dramatic-traumatic travel experiences, Miss Bren and Brother D made it back from HorrorHound Weekend, and are ready to talk all about it! It was an amazing experience, despite the travel trouble getting to and from the event, and since their attending HorrorHound Weekend would not have happened without the support of the listeners and the MOZ Family, they want to share! Additionally, two more movies are reviewed this week - Graveyard Alive and Dark New World get their Headshots this episode. Also, we hear back from some of the 2008 Dead Letter Award Winners, and April's Zombie Aptitude Test question is announced. Links to HorrorHound Weekend pictures are forthcoming!
